How Susan G. Komen – Los Angeles County Allocated Funds:

Susan G. Komen is the world’s largest breast cancer organization, funding more breast cancer research than any other nonprofit while providing real-time help to those facing the disease. Komen Los Angeles County is working to better the lives of those facing breast cancer in the local community. Through fundraising events like the Komen Los Angeles County MORE THAN PINK Walk, third-party partnerships and donations, we were able to raise more than $1.2 million this past fiscal year.

With these funds, we were able to provide the MORE THAN PINK WALK event and Metastatic Breast Cancer Conference. Our Affiliate was able to facilitate services such as mammograms to more than 2,000 women, support groups and mentoring programs, treatment assistance, education and advocacy programs and more than $165,000 in research.  The money spent is helping the community:

  • Get diagnosed: Komen is the only organization providing uninsured women of all ages with mammograms.
  • Free services for living:  No other organization provides an uninsured woman and her family with care across the entire spectrum of life:  navigation through our complex medical system; meal delivery; temporary financial help for the entire length of her treatment; free surgery and chemotherapy; lymphedema compression garments and more.
  • Researching the causes and treatments:  Next to the U.S. government, Komen is the largest funder of breast cancer research.
  • Programs for specific populations in need: Komen LA County designs, implements and executes culturally relevant programs to address the unique needs of priority populations including African Americans, Latinas and those living with Metastatic Breast Cancer (stage IV).

The positive impact of this funding is significant, but it is not enough – as the need in our community continues to grow.
